Commemoration of the 75th Anniversary
Of Ukraine's Famine-Genocide
On Sunday, November 23rd, the Ukrainian American Community of Northern Ohio will commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Ukraine's Famine-Genocide at Pokrova Church Hall, 6812 Broadview Road, Parma.
The event will begin with a Requiem Service at 2:30 pm in the Pokrova Chapel. A children's procession with a lit torch, symbolizing the International Torch Relay (which circled the world returning to Ukraine in November) and lighted candles will move the event to the Church hall. There the program will feature a staging by the children commemorating the Famine-Genocide, vocalist Myroslava Stefaniuk and "Dnipro" Choir. The program will conclude with a preview of the documentary film "HOLODOMOR: Ukraine's Genocide of 1932-1933". The commemoration is in solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian Diaspora worldwide, who are marking this atrocity the weekend of November 22-23.

Stalin orchestrated the Famine-Genocide of 1932-1933. Up to 10 million innocent victims were starved to death in a deliberate Soviet policy to crush the nationally conscious and independent-minded Ukrainian farmers, at a time when the USSR was aiming to rapidly collectivize its agriculture. At the height of the man-made famine, Ukrainian villagers were dying at the rate of 25,000 per day, or 17 per minute, resulting in one of the worst cases of man's inhumanity towards man, and perhaps the most extreme example of the use of food as a weapon. The genocide is known in Ukrainian as Holodomor-- murder by starvation. More than 20% of the population of Ukraine died as a result of the famine. It's estimated that three million of the victims were children.
