Trakas Proposes Joint Defense Treaty to Blunt Russia
America must be aggressive in newly freed democracies, or lose credibility.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 2008
CONTACT: JIM TRAKAS 216-621-5418 OR 216-534-6347
(INDEPENDENCE) 10TH District Congressional candidate and former State Representative Jim Trakas (R-Independence) today praised the recently negotiated anti-missile defense deal with Poland, and called for more such security measures to guard against rogue behavior in Europe and Central Asia. Trakas proposed the creation of an Eastern European and Central Asian Joint Defense Command, to be backed up by NATO Forces.
"America and Poland are now one in mutual aid and defense, repaying the debt of the great Revolutionary War heroes Pulaski and Kosciuszko, and building a more stable future for Poland in the shadow of Russia," said Trakas. "With Poland's freedom more secure, and the West much more secure from missle attack from the Middle East or Central Asia, the United States must work more missle defense deals, and soon."
"It is now time for a Regional Defense Coaltion to be constructed, and have NATO vote to include the threatened post-Soviet nations into its joint defense umbrella," said Trakas. "With a regional self defense network attached to NATO, it ups the ante of Russian imperialism and blunts the transparent motivations of Prime Minister Putin. By making it voluntary and regional, the free nations that understand the threat the most can choose to affiliate with each other, then with the NATO nations, providing two lines of defense from any hostile threats."
Organizationally, the Regional Defense Coaltion would include the following nations:
the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania (the original captive nations); the Central Asain nations of Kazhakstan, Krygystan, Tajikstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan; the Caucassion democracies of Armenia, Azerbijan, and Georgia; the Eastern European nations of Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus (invited but not probable due to their dictatorship), Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia, Albania. The nations would commit to band together in mutual defense against any regional threats. The Regional Defense Coalition would then become recognized by NATO as an entity, and not as individual states, excluding the existing NATO nations.
The purpose of the group would be to focus on regional defense cooperation, mutual aid, and maintenance of peace in the region if one nation is attacked. The link to NATO would allow the Regional Defense Coaltion to immediately be part of the Alliance. Moreover, the Regional Defense Coalition would also be a zone of free trade and cooperation, similar to the World Trade Organization and the European Union. By mutually supporting one another, the RDC nations could work toward economic independence from Russia as well as joint defense.
"Clearly, America must act and stop the rising tide of imperialism in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The Bear is on the prowl, and only swift and decisive action to organize and meet this imminent threat can secure the freedom of the region without putting more people at risk. By creating an economic and military link with these nations, it bolsters the region and sends the message that Russia needs to behave, because they are not needed in the region." Trakas concluded: "This type of action is needed now, and I vow to prioritize this concept once elected to Congress."
